I don't think they ever grow out of it, but they do learn to channel their destructive energy. Just look at your husband (a grown-up boy), and all of the demolition and renovation of your home :)
Or so I hope. My 5yo still feels the need to dump everything.
LOL I think Zachary has somewhat outgrown. he is almost 5 though. I recently put everything up I mean all of thosearmy men, cars legos... you know all the stuff that makes a mess, he has to ask for it. Then when he is done and if he want something else, then hehas to clean up and gets it. But did not see that working at your son's age. ((sigh)). It'll get a bit better, just a bit. LOL
